One of the Daily Vitals in the Locker Room is to remind Players (who want a reminder) to take a multivitamin each day. Our decision to include the vitamin Daily Vital is based on the general consensus in the medical community of the benefits of taking a daily multivitamin. A primary source for this consensus is a 2002 study by Harvard doctors published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, in which the authors recommend all adults take one multivitamin daily. Daily consumption of a multivitamin may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer and osteoporosis. It can also benefit women during pre-pregnancy and pregnancy.
However, with little regulation of the supplement industry, there are questions as to whether multivitamins are as advertised. The writer of an article on CNN yesterday mentioned a study by ConsumerLab, where a number of brands did not contain the amount of certain vitamins that were claimed or were contaminated with toxic substances.
With these concerns in mind, it becomes very important for each person to find the best multivitamin to take regularly. The CNN article contains two helpful links to PDFs: the first is a simple vitamin cheatsheet and the second lists 11 specific brands to avoid. For those who would like to get much more detailed information about recommended levels of vitamins to consume by age, by gender and for pregnancy, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies has published an in-depth PDF list of vitamin level recommendations.
